Last updated 7 years ago

Throughout automotive history, some companies have transformed the industry in revolutionary ways. As a prominent luxury automotive manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz helped pioneer the entire industry.

When you visit your new and pre-owned Mercedes-Benz dealer, keep in mind that every model was manufactured with patience, diligence, and innovation. If you would like to learn how Mercedes-Benz became the car company it is today, then take a look at this summary of its monumental history.

  • German Roots

It’s common knowledge that Mercedes-Benz is a German company, but you may not have heard how the company formed. In the late 1880s, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz invested in two firms: Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gasellschaft. Benz is credited for creating the first petrol-powered car in 1886.

  • The Introduction of “Mercedes”

Interestingly, nobody with the name “Mercedes” was directly involved in the production of Mercedes-Benz vehicles; rather, Mercedes was the name of an Austrian businessman’s daughter. This Austrian investor, named Emil Jellinek, purchased a Daimler car in 1897. Mr. Jellinek eventually began the promotion of DMG vehicles by entering race events, competing under the alias of Mercedes.

  • The First Modern Car

The turn of the century brought a new era for the automobile industry—the first modern vehicle arrived. This vehicle featured breakthrough innovations including a lightweight and high-performance engine along with a low center of gravity. Mercedes-Benz introduced many technological and safety innovations that other auto manufacturers soon adopted. Ever since the release of the first modern vehicle, Mercedes-Benz continues to lead the industry, which is evident in dealerships worldwide.
